This means the end of SWBF2 online on both PS2 and PC.

Well... that is a major bummer. Looks like we may not have a season ten after-all.

I assume this means that we won't even be able to enter without logging in, correct? Just holding onto the hope that we will be able to login without gamespy.

The game won't be pointed at the servers which will also won't be pointed at their games. There will be no way to play online short of LAN tunneling as far as I know. Maybe there could be a DNS workaround, but it doesn't seem likely from the thread on NeoGAF.

Thank-you for posting this information, SG.

In the wake of this news, we should start thinking of hosting one last BFC tournament before the servers shut down for good ole times' sake.

By the off chance that for whatever reason we can still play after gamespy shuts down, then great. We can go through with doing season ten. However, we probably should do a tournament before just in case the servers are shut down.

I thought it wasn't even required to to login to Gamespy to be able to get to the server lists?

That's what I am hoping for. Hopefully all that comes out of this is that we have shorter names than previously. lmao.

Lol, logging into Gamespy only does stat tracking and social features. They are shutting down the GameSpy master server so you won't be able to play online.

Thank you for the update - this obviously impacts our connection to SWBF3 and crossover. So it will take a more concentrated effort on our parts. I am ok with one last hurrah tournament though.

I just remembered that Starseeker always used this thing called Openspy to log onto Battlefront when Gamespy was down. I never tried it, but apparently it worked.
I looked it up, and it turns out to be an organization that is there solely for the day gamespy shuts down.

http://www.openspy.net/

If you look, Swbf2 isn't on their list of supported games, but they also said, "If you found that the game YOU play also works on openspy, please tell us immediately so we can add it to our list of supported games." Plus people have apparently used it on Bf2 before.

I don't have my ps2 atm, so someone's gotta follow the instructions to see if you can actually log on with Openspy.

When I saw the news I immediately thought of SWBF2 and the BFC. Even though I haven't played in years SWBF2 is so important to me as my first online game and what really defined me as a gamer today.

Yeah. I never really thought this day would come to be honest. Regardless, I think we are very fortunate that we got to play this game as long as we did. Some games have their servers shut down after a year. We were fortunate to have online support for like 9 years.

Looking at the bright side, we know SWBF3 is coming. It would have been truly tragic if SWBF3 was not announced and this news came down. If the servers do shut down and we can no longer go online, it's just a waiting game until SWBF3 comes out. The BFC is going to do its best to carry onto SWBF3 and give a place where we can all play together again.

As for the openspy thing, the problem still remains that the servers may not work at all. Even if we can get to the server list, there probably won't be anything to connect to. I don't really know though. We'll have to see what happens when that day comes.

I did some testing today using Openspy, which is basically just someone hosting a server list for several old PS2 online games.

http://openspy.net

Its really easy to set up all you do is edit or make a new network configuration with these as the manual DNS inputs:
Primary DNS IP: 99.198.122.113
Secondary DNS IP: 208.67.222.222

I am able to play SWBF1 online and connect to 4 mans right now. Theres some people playing on there. If things actually do stop working for us on the 31st of May all we need to figure out is how to host dedicated servers on Openspy. I'll be talking to a bunch of people and trying to figure things out.

Keep testing, for now, we plan on doing a world cup thing to start relatively soon - so advertise, tell old and new gamers to come back to this site for one potentially last hurrah on SWBF2 then we can focus on SWBF3.

I think that the problem will be getting the server themselves to point to openspy's dns. Either the server settings or the executable itself will need to be modified. I don't believe that changing your router settings to point to the openspy dns will be enough.

Looking through the Battlefront II.exe file it seems that the server is pointed at specific domains and not simply IP addresses for its DNS and IP lookup.

Code:

$s.available.gamespy.com
$s.master.gamespy.com
natneg2.gamespy.com
natneg1.gamespy.com

Yea anthony_b was working on trying to modify the dedicated server file to try and make itself be put up on the Openspy list. He didn't have any luck yet, but thats what we need to do. If this doesn't work out, me and Starseeker we're also trying to do LAN tunneling through xlink. Its much more complicated however and I think the best we could do with that would be servers run from our own PCs. It also requires more stuff in general so it would be much better if we could use Openspy or fake a master server list. Here's the guide link for the xlink stuff:

I have no idea if AoWC would continue to offer servers running on an unofficial master list. If we do get this to work, we may be stuck with self-hosted servers. Though honestly a modern i5/i7 or FX-series rig on a wideband (~50mbps/~20mbps) connection is much better than the machines that hosted the servers back in 2007-8.

Has anyone here played the game on a bridged connection? AKA you connect your PS2 right into your computer rather than your router? The Openspy guys need us to do some testing for them and we can only get the data if we connect via a bridged connection.

EDIT: Wow, nevermind, bridging connections is easy as shit on my Macbook, thought it would be impossible. And you don't even need a crossover cable. I might still need someone who can do it on windows if the Openspy guys ask me for it.

He said all he needed was the .pcap file from wireshark, which you can do on a macbook. I would do it, but I don't know were my ps2 is at Sad

Yea, your right, its way easier than I thought it would be. I also was wrong about needing a crossover cable. I should be able to get it done later tonight.
